Malaga Metro: 55.5 million dollars per station

It took nine years and 800 million euros for Spanish authorities to finally open two lines of the underground system from Malaga. The two lines cumulate for a total of 18 stations and 11.3 kilometers of track.

Excavations and works for the two lines began in 2005. Spanish and local authorities initially estimated the underground system will be opened in 2010. They were off by only four years. However, Malaga became the second Andalusian city, after the capital city of Seville with and underground railway network.

According to local authorities and the newly inaugurated underground system, 48,632 residents and tourists took a ride with the new metro for free. Susana Diaz, the regional president of Andalusia said an extra 138 million euros will be invested in the next period to complete the project. She also said the metro will be fully functioning by 2017.

Despite being a new and expensive project, Malaga metro is still very far from its designed. Line 1 measures 6.7 kilometers from the city center to the University of Malaga while Line 2 measures 4.6 kilometers and goes from the city center to the biggest indoor arena in the city “Palacio de Deportes Jose Maria Martin Carpena”. There are four more lines planed.
