The carpet that dreamt of being more
A Dutch carpet-maker joined with electronics giant Philips to turn people's tendency to look downwards while walking into something useful for everyone. The result is the Luminous Carpet.
Real-time transmitted data shows at people's feet, guiding them to where they want to go or showing other useful information. By illuminating routes, these smart-carpets can lead anyone to safety exits, help people find their way in an airport, hotel or restaurant or any other place.
The technology used, consists of a resistent translucent plastic sheet placed on top of a steel screen fitted with LEDs.
'With this solution, we can enhance safety in buildings, we can inform people, help them navigate inside a building or inspire people,' says Ed Huibers, Sales and Marketing Director, Philips Luminous Carpets.
'You enter the hotel, you get your badge and then the carpet guides you to your room. Inside your room, you have lights in your carpets to guide you, for instance, during the night to go to the bathroom. When you leave your room, you will be guided to the restaurant, or in the case of emergency, it will be very clear where the emergency exit is,' Huibers added.
Although designed for functional use, the luminous carpet could have further uses, especially in interior design.
