Voters from six districts in the states of Assam and Tripura, enclave states in the northeastern countries are the first to vote on Monday.
About 814 million Indian voters are called to vote for more than five weeks and, according to the polls, the vote could end a decade of power of the Congress Party, endorsed by numerous cases of corruption and failure to revive the economy, which made no progress in the last three years.
The Hindu nationalist leader party of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Narendra Modi, is considered the favorite, but could be forced to negotiate with the powerful regional parties to form a majority coalition.
