Turkey to pay 90m euros for 1974 invasion
Turkey’s past actions come back to haunt it after the European Court of Human Rights decided that the country must pay 90 million euros in damages over its 1974 invasion of Cyprus.
Damages are seen as compensation for the losses Cypriots endured during and since the invasion.
In 1974, Turkish military invaded the northern part of Cyprus after a military coup on the island which was sustained by Greece. Since then, Turks have occupied the invaded region and they are the only country to regard it as an independent region.
