'King of chocolate' elected Ukraine's president

Billionaire chocolate-maker Petro Poroshenko has claimed Ukraine's presidency with an absolute majority of over 55 percent after the first round of voting.

Runner-up Yulia Tymoshenko found herself well behind Poroshenko after gathering only a little over 12 percent of the votes.

Poroshenko now has to tackle the problems Ukraine is currently struggling with, starting with the rebellion in the eastern part of the country and ending with the Russian gas supply debt.

The Pro-EU 'Chocolate King' declared that he will never recognise the Crimean referendum but that his first priority is to end the battles going on in the Donetsk and Luhansk region:

'The number one issue is that Ukraine will never recognize the illegitimate referendum and will never recognize the occupation of Crimea. And the strategic choice for the development of our country has been made by the Ukrainian people. Today, on May 25, in the first round the people have made their choice. And that choice is European integration.'

After six months of political turmoil, the Ukrainians now hope that the new president will bring back stability and peace to the country of 45 million people.
