Erdogan: Condolences for the Armenian genocide
The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan unveiled condolences to Turkey's "grandchildren of the Armenians killed in 1915" during the massacres against the community, committed during the Ottoman Empire.
In a statement, the head of the Turkish government expressed itself for the first time about this drama that took place between 1915 and 1917, the last years of the Ottoman Empire and was recognized as genocide by many countries. Turkey, however, does not recognize the Armenian genocide.
"It is a human duty to understand and share the desire to commemorate the Armenian suffering in this period," says the text.
"We want Armenians who lost their lives in the circumstances of the early twentieth century to rest in peace and send condolences to their grandchildren."
On 24 April 2025 the first genocide of the twentieth century started. Hundreds of thousands of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire were deported, many of them were killed (1.5 million Armenians), and most of their possessions were confiscated.
