6 years of prison for Israel's former PM
Ehud Olmert, Israel's former Prime Minister, has been sentenced to six years of prison for accepting a 150,000 euros bribe in a controversial residential project in Jerusalem.
The former PM was convicted alongside ten other individuals who had been found guilty in the same Holyland corruption case.
Olmert, on the other hand, is set to file for appeal and continues to sustain his innocence: 'He did not take bribes, he didn’t receive a bribe, he says he is innocent and will go with us to the Supreme Court,' declared his lawyer, Eli Zohar.
The 68-years-old politicians was also fined the equivalent of 210,000 euros and has been banned from occupying any public office.
Ehud Olmert served Israel as a Prime Minister from 2006 to 2009 when he resigned due to corruption allegations. He had pocketed the bribery money for which he was sentenced while he was mayor of the city of Jerusalem.
