No more free ads on Facebook

Changes recently made to the Facebook interface and the way users receive news feeds are making it harder for small businesses to get their customers see new updates. Just clicking the Like button doesn’t necessarily keep you up to date with all the posts on a certain page.

Many small businesses are now left in the position where they have to pay Facebook for advertising when they got accustomed to be able to use social networks for free marketing.

Peter Shankman, author of Nice Companies Finish First: Why Cutthroat Management Is Over—and Collaboration Is In, stands up for the social network mogul, stating that it was inevitable that one day Facebook would not be as free for all as before: ‘Their job is to return value to shareholders, and they do that by finding new ways to generate revenue,’ and goes on by sending a wake-up call to any business that thinks it is entitled to free advertising: ‘That any business would believe that they’re entitled to essentially ‘advertise their business for free,’ on any medium, is naive at best.’

Ultimately, buying an ad space is the only certain solution for a business to send the information they want to its public. Dropping marketing strategies altogether from social networks is not an efficient solution as smaller businesses may lose contact with customers.
