Google drones, coming soon
The Silicon Valley based company acquired, on Monday, Titan Aerospace, a young company founded in 2012 that constructs high-altitude, solar-powered drones.
The purchase is explained by Google’s ambition to ease Internet access delivery to underdeveloped countries.
‘Titan Aerospace and Google share a profound optimism about the potential for technology to improve the world. It's still early days, but atmospheric satellites could help bring internet access to millions of people, and help solve other problems, including disaster relief and environmental damage like deforestation,’ was Google’s announcement.
Although Titan and Google will be working separately, they will have 2 common projects: Google Maps and Project Loon.
Titan Aerospace develops several drone applications, including data delivery, crop monitoring and search-and-rescue aid.
The drones have the possibility of staying in air for up to five years without needing to land to refuel. This feature opens the gates to a unique possibility for exploiting Internet service delivery programs.
