EU wants Gazprom's new pipeline suspended
The construction of Russian Gazprom's South Stream gas pipeline in Bulagria might be suspended as the European Union fears it does not conform with EU's regulations regarding a single energy market.
Brussels EU authorities have sent the Sofia government a letter of notice, giving them one month to respond with the neccessary information. Depending on Bulgaria's report, the South Stream pipeline construction might be terminated and possibly fines could ensue.
Although the construction proccess should have been suspended in March, after Russia's annexation of Crimea, Bulgaria decided it will start the pipeline construction, making it a national priority as the country is so heavily dependent on Russian gas and wants to secure its supply of energy.
Russia also wants to see the construction of the South Stream pipeline terminated as it wants an alternative route to Ukraine to transport gas supplies to western Europe.
EU's interference might only lead to increased tensions between Moscow and Brussels.
