'Awakening' for defense budgets
The military budgets responsibles of EU say that the situation in Ukraine is an "awakening" on spendings in defense of EU countries, while the U.S. supports the use of force in the eastern regions of Ukraine to block separatist movements, writes EUobserver.
"We have 70 years of peace in the back (in Europe), but we see that the power in politics has recovered strongly, which is a rude awakening, and now we need to seriously start concerning about the defense," said Maciej Popowski, Deputy Secretary of the External Action Service of the European Union, at a meeting of EU defense ministers in Luxembourg.
He noted that "this was the general feeling at the table" in the meeting in Luxembourg.
