$5,000 to quit Amazon
In an attempt to make workers take a moment and think about what they really want to do and what they are doing, Amazon offered them $5,000 to quit their jobs.
This strategic move is part of a program called Pay to Quit. Every year, workers are given a sum of money if they decide to resign from Amazon. The first year they receive $1,000, the following year $1,000 more and so on. The roof is set at &5,000.
The program is destined for workers in warehouses, where the products go to be packed and shipped to their destination.
Nevertheless, this tactic doesn’t aim at making people quit their jobs but rather states that Amazon only wants to work with people who truly want to be there. The financial temptation does come with the mention ‘Don’t Take This Offer' in the letter all shareholders receive from him every year.
CEO Jeff Bezoz explains his strategy: ‘Pay to Quit is pretty simple. Once a year, we offer to pay our associates to quit. The first year the offer is made, it’s for $2,000. Then it goes up one thousand dollars a year until it reaches $5,000. The headline on the offer is Please Don’t Take This Offer. We hope they don’t take the offer; we want them to stay. Why do we make this offer? The goal is to encourage folks to take a moment and think about what they really want. In the long-run, an employee staying somewhere they don’t want to be isn’t healthy for the employee or the company.’
