Unreal Tournament is making a return
The early 2000's first person shooter market was dominated by two names Quake and Unreal Tournament. Epic Games just announced they are going to create a new one that will be free.
Old school gamers well in their 30's remember the Unreal Tournament as a game changer for all post first person shooters. Now, the defunct series is making a return. Epic Games confirmed work at a new game stars this month with a small team of UT veterans focused on development for Windows, Mac and Linux. Epic described work as an collaboration between the company, UT fans and UE4 developers.
Epic Games also confirmed the new UT will be created using Unreal Engine 4 and it will be free when ready. Most current games have some king of marketplace where users sell and buy digital content. Every single action brings money back to the creators. Epic said the very first version of the new Unreal will not benefit a marketplace, but confirmed later updates will bring it.
With this announcement Epic starts a new trend. Most games are not announced until deep into development and maybe even production. However, UT fans will have to wait. It's creators said it will need many months to spawn a new good FPS and that sounds like an optimistic deadline as most games need years.
Epic Games is an American video game development company known for the Unreal Tournament Series and Gears of War series.
