New unique mineral discovered
A new kind of mineral was dicovered in Western Australia by miners prospecting for gold and nickel.
The mineral, named putnisite, is unique among the other 4,000 minerals already known to man. It’s colors range from dark to light purple and it has a pink glare.
The mineral can be found on volcanic rock where it stands out from other mineral because of its beautiful color.
Its crystal structure and chemical composition are also unique. Peter Elliot, co-author of the first study on putnisite, said that most minerals are related to a family or a small group of minerals and, therefore, have a lot in common. ‘But putnisite is completely unique and unrelated to anything. Nature seems to be far cleverer at dreaming up new chemicals than any researcher in a laboratory,’ added Elliot.
The bizarre mix that creates the putnisite consists of calcium, chromium, strontium, carbon, sulphur, oxygen, and hydrogen.
Furthermore, experts strongly believe that many more such minerals still lie undiscovered among volcanic rocks.
