Google, the car-builder
Google announced on Tuesday that they plan on building 100 self-driving cars with no steering wheel, gas pedal, brakes or mirrors.
The news comes after four years in which the tech company experienced with self-driving cars in their Google Maps project.
So far, the Google self-driving cars, Toyota Priuses and Lexus SUVs have traveled over 700,000 miles on auto-pilot and have been through many complex situations that drivers experience on a daily basis, especially those involving city traffic.
To show how serious they are about this project, Google has already built a car prototype, a Mercedes Smart look-alike with a spinning radar on top and nothing inside except two seats, an on/off button and a dashboard with only a digital map on it.
The car drives itself relying on sensors which detect objects on the road together with a map for location.
However, the first cars will be limited to 25 mph, making them too slow to be allowed on a highway.
