eBay users advised to change password after cyber attack
eBay, the famous online marketplace was breached by a huge cyber attack. More than 140 million users records from the database were stolen. Now, officials at eBay are urging users to change their passwords.
Based on the shire number of accounts compromised, it will go down as one of the biggest data theft in history. The news came out after eBay posted on its site a worryingly message that was advising all users to change their security information.
Allegedly, eBay's database was raided by hackers between February and March. The company stated that the stolen data contained encrypted passwords, but no financial data and that not unauthorised activity regarding member accounts was detected.
However, eBay confirmed it will contact all users to alert them over the breach via email, social media, adverts and mother site. “The best practice that will help enhance security for eBay users is changing the password,” was eBay's message.
US authorities were called in to help identify the attackers. “Working with law enforcement and security experts, the company is aggressively investigating the matter and applying the best forensics tools and practices to protect customers. Ebay regrets any inconvenience or concern that his password reset may cause out customers,” part of the officials statement released by the American company.
