Ahmad Mitig: fifth Libyan PM in two years
Businessman Ahmad Mitig is Libya’s new Prime Minister, the fifth in two years.
He was elected after a day of chaotic voting sessions in which the first round of votes was declared invalid only to be confirmed again later on.
‘Ahmad Mitig was appointed head of the transitional government, and asked to form his cabinet and present it to the GNC for a confidence vote within 15 days,’ said Congress Speaker Nuri Abu Sahmein.
Mitig, at 42, is Libya’s youngest premier since dictator Gadhafi was killed in the 2011 revolution.
Two rounds of voting were needed to choose Mitig as Prime Minister after the first round that took place last week was interrupted when a group of armed men entered the congressional headquarters and forced lawmakers to abandon their posts.
The second round of incidents was not without its incidents as, after Mitig fell short of the 120 confidence votes required, officials began declaring contradictory versions of the outcome.
Ahmad Mitig has taken a heavy burden on his shoulders that the previous prime ministers could not handle.
He took the position from interim PM Abdullah al-Thinni who resigned last month due to an armed attack on his family.
The PM previous to al-Thinni, Ali Zeidan, fled the country over deputies rage that he couldn’t stop rebels from selling oil independently of Tripoli's government.
