It's a big, big world
More obese or overweight people walk the earth now than the total number of people who walked the earth in 1935.
The grim conclusion comes from the most extensive worldwide study on obesity ever taken. The compiled data from 188 countries show that there are 2.1 billion obese people in the world, making it around 30% of the global population.
The numbers had risen by 10% since 1980 and not a single country has reported a decrease in the overweight population over the last 30 years.
The US still holds the crown as the country with the biggest number of obese people, with 86 million of the world's 671 million obese people, but countries in the Middle East and north Africa are experiencing the fastest increase rate in the number of overweight people.
Tonga has the highest percentage of obese people who make up for 50% of the country's population.
'Two-thirds of the obese population actually resides in developing countries,' said one of the researchers, adding that obesity hits men, women and children alike.
