6 reasons for smelly breath
The Atkins diet requires a great deal of proteins to eat. This is the main reason which makes the breath smell bad and it can't be treated by brushing your teeth.
If you were eating garlic or onion for dinner, you shouldn't be surprised if you have a discomforting breath smell in the morning and the first thing you feel like doing is to go brush your teeth. Yet, there are situations when bad breath smell has other factors you didn't think of, like medical treatments or diets with a high rate of proteins.
Here's some of the reasons which cause bad breath smell:
1. Medical treatments
Whenever you are forced to use a medical treatment, you might be confronted with this problem. Usually, one of the adverse effects of pills is the sensation of dry mouth. The lack of saliva makes the breath smellier, due to bacterias which spread and are no longer removed by the saliva. The same thing is happening over night, when the saliva is not as abundant, which is why you wake up in the morning with a bad breath smell.
2. Infections on respiratory tract
Sinusitis, pneumonia or bronchitis are some of the problems which cause a bad breath smell. This occurs due to nasal secretions which flow through the throat inside the mouth.
3. You sleep with the mouth wide open
Just like medical treatments get your mouth dry, which stops the production of saliva, the habit of sleeping with the mouth wide opened may cause the bad breath smell.
4. Eating a lot of proteins and low amount of carbohydrates
A diet based on exaggerated amounts of proteins and with limited carbohydrates may generate a bad breath smell, which comes from the stomach. This can't be removed simply by brushing the teeth. It's recommended not to exaggerate with proteins and having a balanced nutrition style with fruits, veggies, complex carbohydrates, good fats and moderate quantities of proteins.
5. Suffering from obesity
According to a study made in 2007, it seems that people who are overweight have to deal with this embarrassing problem more often than other people. Then, another research published in 2013 quoted by Huffington Post explains the reasons for which obese people have bad breath smell: inside the intestine some gases take place, which lead to bad breath smell.
6. Some medical problems
Some affections may lead to bad breath smell, which is a bit weird. For example, people who have kidney problems may have a strong smell of fish. A medical consult at urology might be highly recommended, if you have observed this symptom. A fruity breath smell may be related to diabetes. It occurs when the level of sugar from the blood is not under control. Also, certain types of cancer produce chemical compounds, which also may cause a smelly breath. The gastro-esophageal reflux may also be related to this problem, due to stomach acid which always tends to reach the esophagus.
