Kerry: Afghanistan is at a critical moment
Afghanistan in in a critical situation. These are the words of US Secretary John Kerry who took a visit to Afghanistan. The tensions are so high because of the upcoming presidential elections.
After more than ten years of ruling. Hamid Karzai is stepping down. He took power after the military actions US took in Afghanistan to erase Taliban militants. The fight for the power is larger than ever before between Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani. US Secretary john Kerry has already scheduled talks with both presidential candidates.
Along his talks with the two of then, Kerry has also scheduled an official talk with the current president, Kamid Karzai and official from the United Nations present in Afghanistan.
Tensions emerged after Abdullah won the first round of voting and his chances of clinching the second round were very high. However, the independent election commission declared Ghani the winner of the second round with more than 55 percent of the votes and a difference of almost one million votes.
The official results of the Afghan presidential elections will be announced on July 22. Until then, Abdullah rejected the preliminary results saying the were invalid because of heavy fraud. Worried that the political situation might led to armed conflict Kerry took the visit to Afghanistan.
Kerry's talks with both presidential candidates are scheduled at the US Embassy in Afghanistan.
