Zero income for half young Spaniards

Owning a house, as a young Spaniard is almost impossible. The latest survey of CJE Group revealed that 48 percent of young Spanish people have no form of income what so ever.

Spain has been battling high unemployment for some time, but the most worryingly statistic for the government is the one regarding young people. The official figure is very bad. Almost 48 percent of young people between 16 and 29 have basically no money. On paper they do not receive any salaries and no government benefits.

The other part of the age group that is actually working has nothing to brag about. A third of them are on temporary contracts and half of them with a duration shorter than 12 months. 25 percent of the working group is doing so part-time.

The numbers are devastating especially for this age group. Owning a house is just a dream, but most of the people within the age group can't even afford a rent. In the autonomous regions of Andalusia, Cantabria and Basque Country less than 20 percent of people between 16 and 29 are able to leave their parents home.

This survey reveals the dramatic situation of young people in Spain and the precariousness and exploitation which are a key feature of youth employment in the country,” said Ricardo Ibarra, CHE Group President.
