Record prize pool for 2014 Roland Garros
The French Open became the wealthiest tennis event around the year. The French Tennis Federation announced the 2014 edition of Roland Garros will have a pool prize of 25 million euros.
Hundred of player will battle for record prize money in this year's event. The prize pool announced by french officials is ten percent larger than a year ago. The official figure is 25,018,900 euros for the entire Grand Slam. The winners of the men's and women's singles will each get 1,650,000 euros. The prize is 150,000 euros larger compared to 2013.
“This is a significant raise in the prize money at Roland Garros is part of the four-year plan which we established for 2013-2016, It is specifically designed to benefit players who are knocked out in the first week,” said Gilbert Ysern, the tournament director.
Of the four Grand Slams, Roland Garros has the biggest increase in prize pool within the last four years. In 2009 the clay event in Paris had 16.150.460 euros as prize money. Five yeas later, the amount grew with almost 10 million euros.
The third and fourth Grand Slams in 2014, Wimbledon and US Open will each reward their competitors with 24.5 million euros.
