English Earl sells entire mountain

Hugh Lowther, British Earl of Lonsdale, has put out for sale a rather interesting item. The Earl is selling Blencathra, one of Britain’s highest mountains to pay a tax bill.

Lowther, the eighth Earl of Lonsdale, is selling an entire mountain which had been in his family for over four centuries. The price is set at $3 million.

Selling a whole mountain was not his first option. After going through furniture and expensive artwork, the Earl was still short of paying the tax bill.

Even though the purchaser of the mountain will not be able to actually build something on it as the property is subject to strict rural zoning regulations, buying the mountain does have a unique perk.

Whoever buys the mountain will be able to call himself a Lord as the property includes the title ‘Lordship of the Manor of Threlkeld’, an ancient feudal title, acquired by Lowther’s forefathers in 1620.

Reaching 868 meters above sea level, Blencathra overlooks the northern end of one of Britain’s most visited national parks.
