Costs of the Balkans flood
Numerous foreign aid teams have speard across Bosnia and Serbia and begun pumping flood water out of towns and helping in any way they can.
As people start rebuilding what they can of their pre-flood lives, the costs needed to do that overpower the two governments' possibilities.
In order to repair what the flood had wrecked, an estimated 1.3 billion euros are needed. Both Serbia and Bosnia have began talking with the EU for receiving financial support.
The agricultural industry, ingrastructure, buildings and houses plus 3,500 kilometers of roads and 30% of railway lines have been wiped out by the torrential rain that is now categorized as a natural cataclysm.
Alongside these visible losses, there are other that no amount of money can bring back: 51 people have lost their lives and other thousands are left homeless, with no electricity, no drinking water and little hope.
Local priest Predrag Markovic said that, in spite all the efforts made for the poeple, the situation remains desperate: 'The situation is quite alarming. Even though the attempts to help people and animals have been wonderful, you can’t say the situation is good if people have no electricity and if they are forced out of their homes.'
