10 million euro 'bug'
An organized group of thieves left a few German casinos a few million euros short in just one night. The coordinated group managed to pull off a coordinated attack in February that was found out only a few days ago.
Spiegel was the first to report the heist and the efforts put together the police to find out who the thieves were. Apparently, the suspects knew a weak spot in slot-machines software and were able to exploit it. Using a certain number combination just before pulling the lever made the device dump out tones of money.
Initial police information suggest that some casinos were striped by as much as 100,000 euros. However, the biggest loser could be Gauselmann. The company delivered in excess of 100,000 slot machines all across Germany and now it could face law suits for at least ten million euros in damages.
Mario Hofmeiseter, a Gauselamann representative stated, “The machines were not used in an authorized manner, so our company is not responsible for any damages”.
